The different grasslands found in North America are described, including California grasslands, intermountain grasslands, shortgrass prairie, mixed prairie, and tallgrass prairie. Many plants and animals found in this biome are described through on-location footage. Other terminology includes: savanna, grass, prairie, nutrients, and bison. Deserts and the Tundra: Vivid footage of the Sonoran and Mojave deserts reveals climate, soils, plants, and animals. Special attention is paid to the adaptations of some desert organisms, which allow them to live in this harsh biome. The dominant trees, herbaceous plants and interesting animals that make up these forests are investigated. Other terminology includes: conifer, taiga, spruce, fir, deciduous tree, maple, beech, oak, hickory, canopy, understory, herbaceous, sloth, Everglades, epiphytes, ferns, vines, palmetto, and strangler fig. Water: Characteristics of various ocean zones, including variations in ocean temperature, salinity, and depth are discussed. The different groups of marine life and adaptations of plants and animals are highlighted. Estuaries and various freshwater environments, such as streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes are also explored. Other terminology includes: aquatic, sea anemone, benthos, plankton, nekton, intertidal zone, neritic zone, open ocean, running water, standing water, and biological productivity.
