Opening footage portrays Haiti's devastating earthquake in action, wreaking almost incomprehensible destruction. Thousands were killed, thousands more were orphaned, and hundreds of thousands were left homeless. A Canadian doctor, John Yates, has devoted his life to helping Haiti's needy. Rushing back to Port au Prince after the quake, he found that his two sons were unscathed, to his great relief. Then he made his way to Grace Children's Hospital, which he had helped to build, to assess the damage there. Devastated to find the buildings a complete write-off and many staff dead or missing, Dr. Yates discussed next steps with the remaining staff while surviving children lay in hospital beds outdoors. Traveling further, he came across an orphanage where 80 children needed aid. With only basic medical supplies, Dr. Yates, his sons and his daughter pitched in to provide rudimentary medical assistance. The immediate challenge in Haiti is to meet the basic needs of millions in a broken city and to see better organization for the aid pouring into the city; but the longer term challenge is to maintain international interest in helping these resilient, determined people to move forward.
