Old Town Lunenburg (Nova Scotia) Established in 1753, Lunenburg was the first British Colonial Settlement in Nova Scotia outside of Halifax. It was settled by German farmers who would become fishermen and shipbuilders, gaining international fame at the end of the age of sail as the builders of the Bluenose. It is the last recognizable example of the British military's "Model Town Plan" still enhanced by the unique character of colourful wooden houses dating back to the late 1700's and 1800's. The fate of the town is said to "hang on a fish hook", but as situations and options change, this town has shown time and time again that it will persevere. Its admirable residents find creative ways to preserve their heritage, while evolving for survival.
