In the isolated arctic barrens of Manitoba, Canada marked its first foray into space exploration and laid the groundwork for satellite communications. On the grounds where military once secretly transported new crafts and supplies to the British Amy in World War II - the Churchill Research Range was established. From 1954 to 1970 it would see over 3500 successful rocket launches. It had become the world's most advanced, and confidential, upper atmosphere research centre. In 1985 the last rocket was launched but over 50 buildings stand as a testament to a time when technology was in its infancy and Canadians played a leading role in its development.
