Elder Steve Kejick of Shoal Lake First Nation Band 39 on the Ontario Manitoba border describes the traditional Anishinaabe belief that the creator listens to you wherever you are. After experiencing a vision, he was honoured and blessed by his elders in a traditional ceremony and became a healer, a pipe carrier and a drummer for his community. Elder Kejick celebrates spiritual, fasting and healing rituals in the round house including the memorial ceremony, smudging, and sweat lodge ceremonies.  Continuing to practice traditional rites is important for the well-being of the community.
