The urbanization and deforestation of North America has led to the development of concrete jungles which in turn leads to "urban heat islands". These lead to higher levels of air pollution, increased temperatures, habitat and species loss within these areas. Now, more than ever, plants and trees are so important for our well-being. Not only do they look nice, but they protect us from harmful UV rays, act as wind barriers, reduce water runoff and soil erosion, filter air pollution, absorb harmful carbon dioxide and provide habitat and protection for various species. Schools across the country have implemented "greening" programs to help create a better environment in their communities. Take a look at some of these exciting schoolyard ventures. Shannon Thunderbird, Tsimshian First Nations elder and storyteller explains that First Nations people are the original environmentalists.  They consider the earth to be sacred, and they believed the land belonged to the creator, not to individuals.  She describes the teachings of the medicine wheel, originally built by plains native peoples and now adopted by first nations across Canada as a way of relating to each other, and developing character.  The earth will survive only if we treat it with respect.
