Topside workers on coke ovens have the most dangerous job in industry. Union and company representatives at Stelco Ltd., Hamilton, Ontario, describe the hazards of working on the ovens, and the efforts being made to improve conditions. Emissions from the ovens are dangerous not only for the workers, but for the whole community. Hamilton has the highest rate of lung cancer in Canada--and possibly in the world, says one of the workers.
