The Documentary Tradition: Tape 1 includes two historical films. Winner of over twenty international awards, City of Gold is a vivid recollection of the Klondike gold rush at its frenzied height. The film, narrated by Pierre Berton, captures the agonizing months during which would-be prospectors struggled through steep passes and wintry trails to reach the fabled gold fields 2000 miles north of civilization (21 min. 40 sec.). Filmmaker Donald Brittain's acclaimed and controversial 1964 documentary, Bethune recounts the remarkable career of Dr. Norman Bethune who served with the loyalists during the Spanish Civil War (where he pioneered the world's first mobile blood transfusion service) and who is revered to this day in China where he served with the North Chinese Army in the Sino-Japanese War (58 min. 38 sec.).
