In May 1914, 1477 passengers and crewmembers boarded one of the Canadian Pacific's most luxurious ocean liners: the Empress of Ireland. A few hours after departing Quebec City, in the early morning hours and in thick fog, the Empress collided with a collier. With the liner’s starboard hull ruptured, water poured in frighteningly fast.  A mere fourteen minutes after the impact, the great liner sank into the dark, icy waters of the St. Lawrence River.
May 29, 2014, marks the 100th anniversary of this maritime disaster, in which more than a thousand passengers lost their lives—a toll comparable to that of the Titanic sinking two years before. The documentary Journey to Oblivion: The Empress of Ireland Story relives this harrowing story, with compelling imagery that takes the audience on a guided tour of the vessel and includes views of the wreck never before captured on camera. Interviews with the most knowledgeable experts on the Empress of Ireland and other transatlantic liners of yesteryear provide fascinating insight into the circumstances of the sinking.

Journey to Oblivion: The Empress of Ireland Story is the definitive documentary about this ill-fated voyage—essential viewing for anyone interested in learning more about one of history’s costliest shipwrecks.
