In this Short Cut TV episode, Claire Parsons reviews some troubling research as she unpacks the infamous David L. Rosenhan research - Being Sane in Insane Places. In 1887, New York journalist Elizabeth Cockrane went uncover as Nellie Bly, as she pretended she had gone mad to see how she and other patients would be treated at Blackwell Island Asylum. She wrote the telling expose called 10 Days in a Mad-House. It was 85 years later, in 1973 that an even bigger experiment would go underway as Rosenhan persuaded 7 people to be committed to 12 different hospitals in 5 States under fake, inaccurate symptoms of schizophrenia. This experiment would ultimately deliver shocking results as sane individuals and rational practices were re-interpreted as insane and irrational as the de-personalization of patients and extensive medication was documented the in the Participant Observation Study. What Rosenhan had truly learned was how difficult it is to be psychologically troubled in an insane place.
