Ancient indigenous architecture influences architects who design modern longhouses, living spaces, and hotels. Drew explores Colorado’s 800-year-old Pueblo cave dwellings. In Washington, he meets Daniel Glenn, an expert in culturally responsive architecture. Glenn created an affordable, green townhouse unit for the Puyallup Tribe, drawing on the Salish longhouse tradition. He also designed a modern traditional village, the Stillaguamish Tribal Centre in Arlington, WA.

Patrick Stewart designed BC’s David Pranteau Aboriginal Children’s Village for foster children. Vancouver’s boutique hotel and gallery, Skwachàys Lodge, has both guest suites and resident accommodations for indigenous artists. The sweat lodge and smudge room offer guests aboriginal cultural experiences. Architecture, a blend of practical and art, can also preserve indigenous traditions.

In Going Native, celebrated humorist and author Drew Hayden Taylor examines the stereotypes and traditions of Indigenous identity while discovering cool new ways Indigenous people are shaping their culture in the 21st century.
