Bison, very abundant on the plains, were an important resource for indigenous peoples. Mass slaughter in the late 1800’s almost made them extinct, but conservation efforts are bringing them back. At Maskwacis, Bruce Cutknife of the Samson Cree Nation has a small herd of bison (buffalo). Elder Clarence Wolfleg describes the importance of the bison, and Kurt Buffalo describes the Cree relationship to buffalo and Mother Earth. Shayla learns about buffalo stories of different indigenous groups, buffalo hunting techniques, uses for different parts of the animal, and the importance of educating settler people about ecology and sustainability. At the Samson Cree Nation Museum director Beverley Crier talks about winter counts. Doc concludes with the story “Where the Buffalo Roam”, explaining the origin of the stars in Pleiades.
