Canada is a "barn raising" nation with a strong history of neighbours looking out for each other, said Canada's new Governor General David Johnston in one of his first sit-down interviews since assuming the role. Johnston, who was sworn in as Canada's 28th Governor General on October 1st, 2010 told CTV's Canada AM it's a characteristic that has shaped Canada in the past and will keep it strong in the future.

Johnston, who succeeded former governor general Michaelle Jean in the role, has a long and successful career in academia and has worked with both the Conservatives and Liberals on various projects. In his inaugural speech, Johnston outlined his plans to make families, education and volunteerism the focus during his time at Rideau Hall. "The broad theme is a smart and caring nation -- two adjectives each powerful and important. And under that we have three pillars, the first is family and children, the second is learning and innovation and the third is philanthropy and volunteerism."
