The Abenaki language has managed to survive the past several generations. Two groups of people are working to preserve their Abenaki language and culture. The Québec community of Odanak, the present day hub of Abenaki culture and knowledge, has only three fluent speakers remaining. Monique Nolett-Ille uses games and songs in her weekly classes. In Vermont Abenaki leaders gather to discuss the fate of their language and culture. The Abenaki Alliance, composed of disparate bands in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, are struggling for government recognition.
