From the time a child is first capable of self-realization, he or she begins to ask, "Who am I?" The development of self-identity begins in infancy, and by middle childhood a sense of self is well-established. Viewers will see children at play and witness how they interact with their peers as well as the teachers and other adults in their lives. During this period, through their own observations and the words and actions of those around them, children acquire ethnic and racial identities. Preschoolers explore gender roles in their play, and older children grapple with the issue of gender stereotyping. Throughout this growth process, teachers and parents are integral in helping children form their own identities and understand how they fit into the world around them. Self Identity & Sex Role Development illustrates ways in which teachers and administrators can help their students grow into healthy, well-adjusted adults.
