Hockey and lacrosse both have origins in Indigenous history. Lacrosse was a sacred medicine game used by the Haudenosaunee to settle disputes between nations. On the Six Nations Reserve, Drew gets a lacrosse lesson from two legendary players and meets Bo Henhawk who handcrafts hickory lacrosse sticks the traditional way.
In the Sipekne’katik First Nation, NS, boys love to play ball hockey. At the Millbrook First Nation Cultural Centre, Drew meets the creators of a documentary about the Mi’kmaq origins of hockey. Ethan Bear, a Cree player for the Edmonton Oilers, runs a summer hockey camp for kids with his coach-cousin Courage Bear back home at Ochapowace Nation, SK. He hopes to see more Indigenous players in the NHL.
