While visiting friends in Fort Rupert, Hayley makes her way to BC’s Great Bear rainforest to learn about the elusive Kermode bear, also known as spirit bear. It is a subspecies of black bear with a recesseive gene that makes its fur white and is regarded as sacred by the Tsimshian people who say creator gave them the white bear to remind them of the ice age. We see some of the beautiful shots taken by photographer Debra Garside.

At the BC Wildlife Park, Danielle Rovers introduces Clover, an orphan bear cub they took in. Harvey Robinson, elder in the Kitasoo Xai’xais First Nation, says some of the Klemtu people have the spirit bear, or the ghost bear, as their crest, but he does not have the right to share the legend. Doc concludes with two traditional stories of Spirit Bear and its supernatural powers.
