Imagine your child leaves for work one morning - and never comes back. That's what happened to Jean and Rob Ellis. After the accident, the Ellis family realized David was not alone. The numbers are staggering. On average, one young worker is killed on the job every week in Canada; another 60,000 are hurt on the job. These numbers are steadily rising, while accidents for all other age groups are declining. Maureen Shaw, of Ontario's Industrial Accident Prevention Association, describes it as an epidemic. She points to a combination of age and inexperience that make young workers vulnerable. The Ontario Labour Ministry sent a strong message by giving the bakery involved in David Ellis' death a hefty fine and unprecedented jail sentence. And workplace safety is now part of the high school curriculum in Ontario.
