Hydrocarbons come in many different forms, consisting of just carbon and hydrogen atoms in different combinations. Petrol, kerosine, diesel and propane are all examples of hydrocarbons that we use on a daily basis. This film will teach you how hydrocarbons get their different properties depending on how many carbon atoms the molecule contains. You will also learn that the gas methane contains just one carbon atom, followed by ethane, propane, butane and pentane, and that saturated hydrocarbons are called alkanes. And that unsaturated hydrocarbons with double bonds are called alkenes and the ones with triple bonds are called alkynes, and they react easily with other substances. Finally, you will learn that polymers often are used for making plastic bags and synthetic fabrics.
