Norse Sagas and archaeological findings at L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland come together to reveal the history of the first European presence in Canada.
500 years before the British and French arrived in North America, another group of Europeans – the Norse, often known as Vikings – found themselves on Canadian shores. Led by Leif Erickson, they formed the settlement now known as L’Anse aux Meadows. Explorations of the Bay of St. Lawrence led to encounters with the ancestors of the Beothuk, the Mi’kmaq and the Innu. Today, archaeological findings have combined with oral and written traditions to piece together this once forgotten and oft-ignored history.
