WINNER: BEST DOCUMENTARY - Toronto Short Film Festival 2026

The Lines She Carries follows Inuk filmmaker and Indigenous Geographic co-founder Crystal Martin as she reaches a turning point in her life, the end of her childbearing years. In Oolootie’s home, she prepares to receive her traditional tunniit. A tunniit is a deeply sacred facial marking that marks not only their skin but their journey through womanhood, identity, and survival.

Crystal speaks openly about the lasting effects of residential schools and how they attempted to erase Inuit culture, taking from women the right to carry their stories on their faces. Through her tunniit, she reclaims that right. Each line becomes a statement of resistance, a way to honour those who came before and to remind future generations that healing begins when we take back what was ours.

This film captures Crystal’s strength and vulnerability, a woman standing in both pain and pride, carrying the weight of history and the hope of what’s yet to come.
