The Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach is located near the Quebec-Labrador border, 15 km northeast of Schefferville, and is the only Naskapi Nation community in Quebec. It is proud to have 100% fluency in the Naskapi language and they produce their own books and created a syllabic language software. Originally a nomadic people, the Naskapi (Innu) lifestyle revolved around the caribou herds. Travelling with their families in small groups, they followed the hunt. The Naskapi eventually gave up this way of life with the arrival of the fur trade, a dramatic change that almost destroyed them.
