For the Dakota Nation of Wahpeton, SK, reconnection to their heritage spiritual beliefs has led to the revival of their language and ceremonies after the residential schools and bans of ceremonies made these almost extinct. The Dakota people, also called the Santee Sioux, originally occupied a region in today’s Minnesota. Lakota, Nakota and Dakota form the Siouan language group with different dialects. The Wahpeton Spiritual Healing Lodge is bringing healing and revival to the Dakota Nation. Their Wahpeton Dakota Nation School has the Dakota language as its priority, developing a new generation of keepers of the language.
