The Sámi, the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia, are concerned with preserving their language and traditional knowledge. Sámi is an official language of Norway, and reindeer herding is a way of life for many Sámi families. Gouvdageaidnu, in Norway’s arctic highlands is a Sámi speaking community. Its local Sámi radio station includes a children’s program, using technology as a modern ‘campfire’ to tell stories to children. The high school here teaches reindeer herding and Sámi language theatre preserves their history, yoik music, and culture. Despite earlier Norwegian attempts to assimilate non-Norwegian speakers, Sámi is thriving.
