Made with a crew of older adults, this short horror film centres around Edna, a senior aged woman who discovers that a discarded throw rug she has found will, for lack of a better word, digest anything left under it. The more it digests, the more it wants. After devouring her pesky landlord and a nosey cop, the rug has gotten so frisky that Edna finds herself trapped in her own home with no way out. Based on the short story by Edo van Belkom. Funded in part by the New Horizons for Seniors Program.
The Rug emerged directly from the film Silver Screamers. Inspired by the voices, themes, and genre passions documented in the feature, The Rug translates those insights into a tightly focused narrative work of fiction. The short operates as both a companion piece and a creative extension of the documentary—demonstrating how real‑world stories and lived experiences can spark new genre storytelling. Together, Silver Screamers and The Rug offer a unique paired viewing experience: one grounded in documentary inquiry, the other in imaginative cinematic expression. Presented jointly, they provide educators, students, and audiences with an opportunity to examine adaptation, inspiration, aging, and genre culture across both non‑fiction and fictional forms. Features Jayne Eastwood, Tony Nardi, Zoë Belkin, Jonathan Kim.
