Filmmaker Jesse Green travels to his home community of Shoal Lake 40 interviewing people about the impacts of the City of Winnipeg aqueduct in the 100+ years since it was built. Weaving in interviews with historians and archival material Green builds a strong case about the exploitation of his community. It’s a history that speaks to a dirty truth: The major artery piping clean water to an urban centre has displaced and isolated an Anishinaabe community in Treaty 3 territory, robbing them of their own drinking water.
2019 marked the centennial of the aqueduct and in the same year “Freedom Road”, an all season road, finally connected them to the Trans-Canada Highway. The Shoal Lake #40 water issue continues to capture global attention. StrongFront.tv is an Indigenous media production company committed to sharing the voices of First Nations and Metis people through the lens of resiliency and empowerment.
