The population of large cities has increased after decades of rural exodus. This situation has increased urban poverty and opened the door for the creation of ghettos and slums. A significant number of people all over the world live in extreme poverty. In cities, it is increasingly common to see children begging on the street while people pass them with jaded indifference. Before the plight of the poor, we must ask ourselves whether we have lost our spirit of solidarity and if we have become insensitive to the suffering of others. Architects of Change featured: * Patama Roonrakwit , an architect and community activist from Thailand. Through her numerous projects, her goal is to improve living conditions for Thailand’s urban poor. * Efren Penaflorida grew up in a poor family in the Philipines. He finished his high school education but was often harassed by neighbourhood delinquents attempting to get him to join their ranks. Efren decided to fight back by offering youth in his situation an alternative: The Dynamic Teen Company. * Sylvain Laroche was concerned about the flight of young people from their rural village, Saint-Camille in Quebec’s Eastern Townships. Sylvain and others founded a residents’ investment group. They bought the local businesses that had closed, or were on the verge of closing, revitalising community life.
