A landscape of stone and rock stretches far beyond the eye's reach on Victoria Island. The Inuit live amongst these great rocks and have learned to carve with the utmost respect. ‘Journey of the Stone’ presents the history of a sculpture, embodying an indigenous story. Sculptor and hunter Inuk Charlie from Cambridge Bay, NU, began his career as a boy, carving toys from alabaster, and learning from his famous father, carver Charlie Ugyuk. He and companions travel 500 km by dogsled to his home village of Taloyoak to get soapstone for his carvings. They build an igloo for shelter, fish for food and search for the best stones. An elder from his father’s clan tells him the story of the Orphaned Polar Bear, inspiring a new carving. The rock guides him as he plans proportions, and we see the polished finished product evolve through many steps.

Also available in French: Le voyage de la pierre à sculpter.
