Just like the music they produce, musical instruments themselves are works of art. This episode celebrates the exquisite craft of handmade musical instruments.

On the southern shore of the island of Montreal 6 people hover above complex plans. Half way around the world in Fuzhou thousands of construction workers are working twenty-four hours a day on the magnificent new Straits Cultural Centre - what connects these two places is the most complex musical instrument known to man – the Pipe Organ and the man at the helm of this project is Jens Peterson, one of the best organ makers in the whole world.

Over at the National Musical Instruments Factory in Shanghai, LI Su Fang makes the ancient Chinese instrument called Guzheng, also known as a Chinese zither with more than 2,500-years of history. The story of the violin on the other hand is inextricably linked to a small town called Cremona in northern Italy. For more than half a century, Master Bisolotti has been making violins by hand and has produced some of the most popular violins in the world. Now he hopes to impart his wisdom and values to the next generation, his apprentice—Chinese national Su Qi.

In Granada, Spain, Eduardo Duran is a fourth generation luthier. He grew up in a family of guitar makers where both his father and grandfather were considered maestros who elevated the art of the Spanish guitar. At the tender age of 16, Duran began to shoulder the weight of his family’s heritage by learning the skills of his grandfather, while putting his own mark on a traditional instrument.
