Measha Brueggergosman, Songs of Freedom Part 1 - In celebration of Black History Month, Soprano Measha Brueggergosman shares her thoughts on African culture and history and the role music played throughout those turbulent years. (4:18)

Measha Brueggergosman: Songs of Freedom, Part 2 - Soprano Measha Brueggergosman hits the AM Soundstage performing Wade in the Water in celebration of Black History Month. These songs had secrets in them that would help slaves escape to freedom. The spiritual "Wade in the Water" is filled with specific instructions for escaping slaves. For an example right from the title, the song was providing a tip, telling escaping slaves that if they could wade in water, the hound dogs that slave masters sent out to find them wouldn’t be able to pick up their scent. (3:54)

Songs of Struggle and Celebration - Black history has long used song to share the stories of struggle and celebration. Vocalists Jackie Richardson and Shakura S'Aida perform "Black is the Colour of my True Love's Hair". Shakura also discusses The Nina Project, a tribute to Nina Simone. Few jazz vocalists have remained as relevant across generations as Nina Simone. Her music is still played in its original form, in dance/house tracks and everything in between. Her music became synonymous with the civil rights movement. (7:39)
