From the very first pre-humans who branched out from a group of apes millions of years ago. To our ancestor Homo Erectus, who walked upright and could control fire, but had quite an ape-like scull. To the Neanderthals, who were a separate branch of Homo Erectus, and who lived in Europe and Central Asia during the last ice age, and from whom we have a small proportion of genes still.
