Jasper is far from any major city and less visited than many of its Rocky Mountain neighbours. Beyond the well-travelled highway, there is vast backcountry wilderness and abundant natural wonders; including the magnificent and intimidating Columbia Icefield. Due to its relative isolation, diversity, and sheer size, Jasper is home to the largest population of mammals in the Rockies. Park staff are particularly attentive to the endangered Harlequin duck, which is indicative of the sustainability of the park's aquatic systems.
