In Mi’kmaq community of Lennox Island, PEI, Rich Francis discovers the “Pearl of the Malpeque Bay”, oysters. Sarah Bernard, a local cultural liaison and cook, treats Rich to her famous seafood chowder. Elder, “Captain Jimmy” Bernard, has worked with archeologists who have uncovered 10,000-year-old artifacts and oyster shell piles nearby. Rich learns about the history and relevance of oysters to the Mi’kmaq tours the Bideford Shellfish Hatchery and learns how the oyster industry is helping drive Lennox Island’s economic future. Out on the bay with an oyster harvester, he “tongs” a boatload of oysters, and at the firepit he creates some new oyster dishes. He is a special guest at the Lennox Island celebrations of National Indigenous Peoples Day.

In the Wild Game Series, chef Rich Francis explores indigenous communities across Canada and traditional and modern methods of harvesting and preparing the food that has shaped their cultures over the millennia.
