This episode of The Green Interview features Andrew Bichlbaum, one of "The Yes Men," a culture-jamming duo that use pranks, humor and their lethal imaginations as powerful weapons in the battle against social injustice and environmental degradation. Bichlbaum and his partner Mike Bonnano are brilliant pranksters who impersonate entities whose practices they're trying to expose by producing fake media releases and creating and maintaining fake websites. Their tactics often lead to conference invitations as well as media requests. One of the duo’s most famous pranks took place in 2004 when Bichlbaum, posing on the BBC News as a spokesperson for Dow Chemical, announced the company would take full responsibility and provide compensation for the 1984 Bhopal disaster—considered the world’s worst industrial accident. Almost immediately after the announcement, Dow’s stocks plummeted by $2 billion, but rebounded once the prank was revealed. In this Green Interview, Bichlbaum discusses what was involved in some of their best pranks.
