This film follows Degrassi creator Linda Schuyler as she explores the human impact of homelessness after discovering an encampment on the grounds of her family’s former ancestral home in Cobourg, Ontario. As the town’s unhoused residents are repeatedly displaced—from unsafe housing, public beaches, and county land—they eventually settle outside Brookside, a vacant youth detention centre equipped with dormitories, kitchens, and protective infrastructure that remains locked and unused. Through personal stories from encampment residents, the film highlights the social, historical, and political forces shaping the crisis, the tensions within the local community, and the challenges faced by grassroots support efforts. As the province prepares to sell the Brookside property for private development, the film prompts critical questions about housing, public land use, and what happens when vulnerable people have nowhere else to go.
"What makes HOME so compelling is its narrative form. It doesn’t rely on an external narrator or expert commentary. Instead, it unfolds as a series of vignettes, letting the viewer become their own narrator. Each story builds a quilt of what “home” means when it’s lost, reclaimed, or reconstructed under dire conditions....Homelessness can happen to anyone. Lose your job, your partner, your health, and you may find yourself on the same edge. As one voice in the film says: “It’s not for lack of will. It’s a lack of housing.” I think often about space, who gets to occupy it, who gets excluded, how power is expressed in the built environment. HOME reminds me that housing is not just a design or policy issue. It’s an ethical one. It’s about the kind of society we want to inhabit together." - Grapevine Magazine
