Outsiderness is a personal documentary by Carlo Alcos, a 2nd-generation FIlipino-Canadian whose parents immigrated to BC in the early '70s. The film explores themes such as identity and belonging from his perspective, that of a brown kid who grew up in a predominantly white suburb and learned to assimilate in order to fit in. In the film, Carlo uncovers what he has sacrificed through adapting and conforming and tries to discover what true belonging means.

With Outsiderness, my intention is to have my personal story resonate with other 2nd generation immigrants who may have experienced similar things that I did growing up. Everyone is familiar with blatant acts of racism like violence and hate speech that make the news, but the experiences of children of immigrants who "blend in" in Canada, particular visible minorities, are more invisible and not discussed openly. I am trying to open up conversations of assimilation, systemic racism, and belonging in our different communities. I also hope that my film offers a perspective to people who don't relate, but that are open minded enough to learn.

From an artistic perspective, my goal was for the audience to feel like a person in the room during the on-screen conversations, which is why I chose to film conversations with me in them rather than the typical talking head interviews. I also wanted the film to feel raw and authentic so almost all shots are handheld with organic camera movements. - Director, Carlos Alcos
