Cheveyo (11), Halidzox (10) and Kimowan (8) are three siblings who live with their family on an island not far from Tofino, British Columbia. They are Ahousaht, one of the fourteen Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations. They get to their home by boat – Kimowan likes to go in the front because it feels like he’s flying! Their room is a cabin in the woods – Ha-li helped her parents build it. It has a secret hatch that opens straight to a berry patch – Cheveyo shows us the way! Living on an island, they spend a lot of time at the beach – finding crabs and picking up shells. Then they do some fun arts and crafts, turning the shells they found into all sorts of things! One of their favourite things to do is put on wetsuits and head out on their paddle boards – “run-and-jump” is a game they made up. Another unique aspect of their life is they live off the land – which means they catch all their own food. They’ll show us how they pull up the crab trap, then cook and clean the crabs for a delicious lunch! Their special word is “tuupaat” which means “ocean” in the Nuu-chah-nulth language.
