Maleah is an 11-year-old girl from the Stz’uminus First Nation who lives in Ladysmith, British Columbia. In her room she shows us some of the beautiful paintings she’s done – including one of her cat, Puss Puss – and explains how it’s important to always put your drum down so that it’s facing up. Maleah and her cousin Amelia love to bake together, and decorate their cupcakes like galaxies! One of the things Maleah is passionate about is racing traditional war canoes. She’s been practicing with her sister Charlise for about two years and they are fast! To relax, Maleah likes to paint… while sitting on the trampoline with her cousin Chevralee! For fun, the two cousins then go for a quad ride in the woods. It’s super important to be safe and wear a helmet, even if you’re a passenger! Maleah feels really proud when she is singing and drumming. She and some friends will share a few songs, including Maleah’s favourite – the Ironman Song. Maleah’s special word is “sq’umul” which means “paddle” in the Hul’q’umi’num’ language.
