Rick Westhead tells the story of Sam Goodwin, a American college athlete and hockey fan who was on a quest to travel to all the world’s 193 countries. While in Syria in the spring of 2019, he was accused of espionage and imprisoned in the notorious Military Intelligence Detention Center. His apprehension was based on suspicion of doing harm to Syrian government, as opposed to any real crime. During his 62 days in prison, he was subjected to solitary confinement, a sham trial, and blindfolded interrogations. Once released, Goodwin said he drew strength from the mental toughness, critical thinking, and resiliency skills that he developed as a competitive youth athlete.
