For thousands of years, the Pueblo, Apache and Navajo peoples have called, and continue to call the southwest region of the United States home. In Albuquerque, a vibrant urban Indigenous hub, Marisa Chavez, a Navajo/Mexican MMA fighter, and Jir Anderson, a Pueblo musician and founder of Native Guitars Tour, turn their personal struggles into sources of strength and inspiration. Marisa channels a difficult childhood, bullying, and early adulthood challenges into a powerful fighting career and mentorship for youth. Jir uses music, cultural teachings, and community‑based mentorship to uplift Indigenous artists.
