Can you come home after death? Can the ocean do the soul’s bidding and take a body thousands of kilometers? Yes, according to the mystery of Coghlan’s Coffin.

The coffin of actor Charles Coghlan was discovered off the coast of Bay Fortune, Prince Edward Island, in 1908. Coghlan had enjoyed his summers at a local spot called Abell’s Cape. Now, a coffin in the water is alarming enough. What makes this story really strange is that Coghlan had died and was buried in Galveston, Texas, in 1899. The following year, hurricane waters flooded the city. Is it possible that he simply floated back to the beautiful and peaceful shores of his beloved summer home?

We’ll speak with a journalist, a historian, a cemetery caretaker, a scientist, and a storyteller. Few believe the story of Coghlan’s Coffin and yet it persists.

Unexplained Canada examines the fact, fiction and possible folly of some our nation’s mysteries. Rather than viewing a mystery with total belief or attempting to debunk it, Unexplained Canada presents many perspectives to encourage viewers to draw their own conclusions.

NOTE: This video was originally produced in 2006. The producer has updated graphics and visuals in this newly released 2022 version.
