Nationally acclaimed Indigenous singer Laura Vinson is developing hearing loss and she sets out on a quest to find other Indigenous Artists who have disabilities. Esther Auger, a young Cree Michif female artist with SOTOS syndrome, paints, does embroidery, and has a dream. Laura learns about the Indigenous Artists Market, an Edmonton collective in the Farmer’s Market. It is run by Lorrie Lawrence who has struggled with depression but is embracing her indigenous heritage and supporting many Indigenous artists. Then Laura has her first ever exposure to a “Slam Poet” with Gabe Calderon, a dynamic two-spirited Slam Poet, and author of 'Love After the End: An Anthology of Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer Speculative Fiction'. Gabe lives with PTSD and fibromyalgia.

Awakeners is a 6-part series with nationally acclaimed Indigenous singer-songwriter Laura Vinson. She is on a personal journey to connect with extraordinary Indigenous artists with disabilities. Their spirit-born work is awakening the beauty of Indigenous people to all who see, hear, and feel their art. Louis Riel’s prophecy is coming to pass! The Indigenous artists are The Awakeners!
