Mooshum tells Natanis a story about his mom making him the brown moccasins he wanted when he was little. His dad tanned a moose hide that turned brown and were used for making the moccasins. They were trimmed with black rabbit fur and a red beaded flower. Mooshum sings songs about beading on his drum.  Today we learn Cree words for colours: grey (kakaskateewinakwan); brown (pihteewinakwan); yellow (osaawaw); black (kaskateewaw); red (miskwaw); green (askitakwaw); white (wapiskaw); orange (osawinaakwan); colour (masinaastiw); blue (sipihkwaw).

This is one episode of the 10-part Stories of the North Series that tells simple Indigenous stories in a fun and positive manner. The series is set in a northern cabin where Mooshum teaches his granddaughters Cree words through traditional stories, merging education with Indigenous language development interactively and authentically. Features Dr. Morris Cook (Mooshum) - Board Chair Northern Lights SD#113 and his granddaughters “Natanis” and “Sekwan” (played by Claire Walker and Mya Hoskins-Fiddler).

NOTE: Not available for sale in Saskatchewan.
