According to Statistics Canada, more than half of Canadian women have been victims of at least one act of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16. This startling fact comes to life in Deepa Mehta’s candid film about the secret world of domestic violence. In this cleverly crafted film, we meet three immigrant women and their families. But what really sets this film apart is that Mehta equips the children with cameras. The children get to ask the difficult questions such as, “Has Daddy ever hurt you in the stomach when you were pregnant?” Whatever form violence takes, talking about it is critical. Fear, shame or embarrassment can keep victims and abusers isolated in the grip of violence. The significant reality of this film is that it not only gives a voice to the children but it shows how much can be gained by the entire family, even the abuser, once the walls of shame and silence have been broken. Award-winning director Mehta brings family violence to light with an emotionally jolting and inspirational film.
