Global conflicts and global warming - oil seems to be at the root of many of our world problems. These GreenHeroes are cutting down on emissions and preserving our earth.

  • Professional NASCAR driver Leilani Munter is an environmentalist and a Green Hero. She used her platform as a race car driver to speak out on environmental issues; as a professional in one of the most popular spectator sports in the world, she reached close to 75 million people. She hoped that as a race car driver she would have more of an impact when speaking about the effects of climate change rather than she would speaking as a biology graduate. By having environmentally friendly sponsors on her car, she communicated the urgency to millions of viewers, motivating a dialogue for change.
  • Clayton Thomas-Muller, a crusader in the battle against the Tar Sands, and First Nations Youth Organizer fought against environmental racism through grassroots climate justice. He wants us all to re-evaluate our relationship with a Mother Earth that has been devastated by the oil industry. Clayton raised awareness of the rise in types of cancers in the Fort Chipewyan area, downstream from the Athabasca River Tar Sands. The increased extraction of oil in Alberta has also led to increased deforestation of the boreal forest. Green Hero Clayton Thomas Muller hopes that humanity will begin to move away from its dependence on oil as we find new technologies. It is our moral responsibility to protect the planet for future generations.
  • When Ian Clifford founded Zenn Motor Co., he paved a road that would revolutionize the auto industry. He knew that fossil fuel is a finite resource and that the future for an internal combustion engine fading. With that in mind, in 2000 he sold his marketing business to launch his electric car company. After setbacks and fights with the Canadian government, Clifford went to the American market to sell a greener future. He turned his focus on creating an affordable permanent energy storage battery technology to transform the auto industry, making Clifford a true Green Hero.
  • Green Hero Andrew Ference, an NHL player for the Calgary Flames and the Boston Bruins, spearheaded the NHLPA's Carbon Neutral Challenge, putting NHL money into renewable energy projects. He was inspired by David Suzuki, and used his platform as a hockey player to create change through example. His initiative started with seven players and grew to  500 . This had a major influence as arenas began to transform their operations, changing the type of lights they used or using biodegradable materials instead of plastic. Andrew respects the planet he will leave for his kids and future generations.
